Equestrian technology is rapidly developing year by year and unless you’re constantly staring at a screen it’s extremely hard to keep up with the latest. MIPS riding hats have received a lot of praise in recent years, one took the top prize and another was highly commended in the safety category at BETA International Awards. MIPS technology is extremely important in the safety of future riding, hopefully this blog will give you a good understanding of why!

So what is MIPS helmet technology?

MIPS stands for ‘Multi-Directional Impact Protection System’, which basically means an additional brain protection system. It was invented in 1996 by Hans von Holst and Peter Halldin in Sweden, so it has been around for quite some time! MIPS protects against rotational motion, which is a combination of rotational energy and angular acceleration. Essentially to prevent your head rotating from angled impacts, which is how most riders fall.

How does MIPS work?

MIPS is an additional liner, added to the inside of the riding helmet. If you were to hit your head at an angle, this low friction layer can slide, enabling your head to move 10-15mm in all directions. Meaning the head doesn’t have to withstand sudden impacts as much, helping to reduce minor and severe brain injuries.

So which riding hats have MIPS in?
